Johnson, Ulmer score for Lions in season-opening loss to Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Brycon Johnson and Dakota Ulmer each scored in the second period for the Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team as the Lions suffered a 5-2 loss to Buffalo State College in the opening round of the Buffalo State Bengal Classic in the first game of the 2018-19 season Friday night.

With the host Bengals (1-0-0) leading 1-0 on a Reid Bibb goal 12 seconds into the second period, Johnson answered back on the power play at the 4:07 mark. Johnson received a pass at the right circle from Alex Tan and ripped a shot that was blocked by a Bengal defender. The puck came right back to Johnson who made no mistake the time around as his second attempt beat a sprawling Connor Minch for the Lions' first goal of the season.

The Bengals bounced right back with back-to-back power-play goals from Hugo Petit and Zach Remers to open up a 3-1 advantage at 10:29.

Dakota Ulmer pulled one of the goals back for Bryn Athyn right at the end of the second period, poking the rebound of an Eric Higgins shot from the left faceoff dot past Minch with two seconds left on the clock.

Ryan Edgar and Hayden Ford both tacked on goals in the third period to tilt the game back in the Bengals' favor.

Bryn Athyn's McKenzie Chalmers was credited with 33 saves on 38 shots, while Minch finished up with 18 saves on 20 Lion shots on goal.

Buffalo State went 2-for-4 on the power play and Bryn Athyn was 1-for-5 on the man advantage. The Bengals owned a 39-27 edge in faceoffs.

Bryn Athyn will have a quick turnaround to prepare for Nazareth College, who lost to Curry in a shootout earlier in the day, in the Buffalo State Bengal Classic consolation round on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 3 p.m.
