BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Tanner Congdon scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season for the Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team in a 5-1 loss to Wilkes University in Junge Pavilion.
With Bryn Athyn (4-17-0) trailing 2-0 in the second period, Congdon cut the Lions' deficit in half when he skated into the slot at ripped a shot by Wilkes goaltender Brandon Gordon at the 13:15 mark of the period. Devon Becker started the play by dumping the puck into the corner for Nikita Smirnov. Smirnov then found the cutting Congdon in the slot area to get the primary assist.
Wilkes (15-5-1) reclaimed its two-goal advantage at 3:11 of the third period as Devon Schell slotted the home rebound left after Bryn Athyn's McKenzie Chalmers stopped a Donald Flynn shot. Michael Gurska also assisted on the play.
Gurska and Flynn tacked on power play goals in the final nine minutes of the contest to pad the Colonels' advantage.
Phil Erickson opened the scoring just 4:04 into the contest when he forced a Lion turnover in their own zone and snuck a backhand by Chalmers for the game's first goal. Nick Fea made it 2-0 at 11:45 by one-timing a Tyler Barrow pass from the right circle into the net on the power play.
Chalmers finished with 33 saves for the Lions, while Gordon stopped 18 shots.
Wilkes scored on four of its 11 power-play opportunities. Bryn Athyn was 0-for-5 on the power play.
After completing a string of three straight home games, Bryn Athyn goes back on the road to visit Lebanon Valley on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.
