BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Sophomore forward Shelby Puccio became the Bryn Athyn College women's soccer program's first 20-goal scorer in the Lions' 2-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) loss to SUNY Polytechnic Institute in the Lions' regular season home game Sunday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
Puccio reached the milestone just 7:55 into the match with an assist from Kristen White, the conference leader in assists with 14. White made a run down the right wing and found an open Puccio in the center of the field. Puccio shot back to the right post and beat Wildcat keeper Angela Bartlett to the short side to put the Lions (9-5-0, 5-4-0 NEAC) up 1-0.
Puccio—the NEAC leader in goals and points (42)—is the ninth player in NCAA Division III to reach 20 goals in 2017.
The early lead was short-lived as SUNY Poly (10-3-1, 6-1-1 NEAC) netted the equalizer less than two minutes later. Ashley O'Connor receiving an outlet pass from Brittany Waterbury and sprinted towards the right post. Keeper Allie Warren charged out to cut down the angle, but O'Connor shot back across the goal mouth to tie the score.
After the two quick goals, the teams would remain deadlocked until the 86:34 mark when Nakeya Stedman put SUNY Poly in front. Adriana Marcolin played the ball from the right wing into the center of the box. Stedman tracked it down and fired a shot past Warren's right side and into the net.
Warren finished the match with 10 saves for the Lions. It was her third contest with at least 10 saves. Bartlett had one stop for SUNY Poly.
Bryn Athyn closes out the regular season with a battle for the top spot in the NEAC southern division at Penn State Berks on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
