Volleyball tripped up by Cedar Crest in CSAC clash

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College women's volleyball team was defeated in four sets (25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 28-26) by visiting Cedar Crest College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match Saturday afternoon in Asplundh Field House.

Briana Cliney had a strong match for Bryn Athyn (5-8, 1-1 CSAC) as she recorded a career-high 11 kills, a .409 hitting percentage, three digs, and two total blocks. Hannah Dewees had eight kills, 16 digs, and one ace. Lex Juritsch and Allaina Brock each added six kills. Juritsch also had a team-high 18 digs, while Brock posted three aces. Jenessa Lombardi matched her career high of 32 assists.

Bryn Athyn claimed a quick 3-1 lead in the opening set and held onto it until Cedar Crest went on a 5-0 run to move ahead 8-5. A Lombardi kill later in the set started a 3-0 spurt that allowed the Lions to knot the score at 14. The Falcons broke the deadlock with a 7-1 run to open up a 21-15 lead.

The Lions had to overcome deficits of 6-1 and 19-15 to claim the second set and level the match. Three straight Cedar Crest attack errors in the dying stages of the set allowed Bryn Athyn to take a 24-22 lead, its first of the set. Chloe Levan clinched the set with one of her two kills.

Cedar Crest took control of the third set with a 7-2 run to snap a 12-all tie and move ahead 19-14. The Lions closed the gap to 21-18, but the Falcons ended the set on a 4-1 spurt. Cedar Crest had 14 kills in the set, while Bryn Athyn only had nine.

Levan had a pair of service aces in a 7-1 fourth-set run that gave Bryn Athyn a 10-4 lead. With the lead sitting at 16-11, Cedar Crest answered back with six of the next seven points to knot the score at 17. Bryn Athyn, led by two Brock aces, ran off four points in a row to reclaim a four-point lead (21-17). After Cedar Crest tied the score at 23, Juritsch recorded her final kill of the match to give Bryn Athyn a 24-23 lead, the last time Bryn Athyn would be in first. The Falcons won the match by snapping a 26-all with back-to-back points.

Lindsey Davis led Cedar Crest (9-3, 2-0 CSAC) with 18 kills and 20 digs. Nicole Hill added 14 kills, while Tiffany Hoppes recorded 23 digs.

Bryn Athyn travels to Rosemont for a CSAC showdown on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
