BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The leadership group for the Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey program has a familiar look to it as head coach Andrew Burke announced Nikita Smirnov will wear the captain's C for the second straight year and Nick Malvasi, Julion Lever, and Devon Becker all retained their roles as alternative captains.
Smirnov—one of four seniors on this year's roster—has played in 64 games during his collegiate career—one season at Aurora University and the last two at Bryn Athyn—and racked up 10 goals and 20 assists. Last season, Smirnov had four goals, two on the power play, and six assists in 20 contests.
Becker had a tremendous freshman season in 2018-19, leading the team with 24 points and 20 assists. He scored four times, including the overtime game-winning goal against Southern New Hampshire. Becker ranked fourth in Division III in points per game for defensemen and points per game for a freshman (1.04) and 23rd in Division III in assists per game (0.87).
Lever has accrued seven goals and nine assists in 42 games since Bryn Athyn made the jump to NCAA Division III in 2017-18. As a junior, Lever recorded one goal and four assists.
Malvasi tallied one goal and seven assists in the first 44 games as a Lion. He had four assists in 23 contests as a sophomore.
Bryn Athyn opens the 2019-20 season on the weekend of Nov. 1-2 at Southern New Hampshire.
