Lions fend off Albertus Magnus for 3-1 victory

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team notched its second victory of the season, knocking off Albertus Magnus 3-1 in the Ralph Walker Skating Rink Sunday evening.

Nikita Smirnov and Dakota Ulmer got Bryn Athyn (2-1-0) off to a fast start with goals in the opening period.

Smirnov scored his second goal of the season at 13:50 with assists from Devon Becker and Sheldon Brett to get the Lions on the board. Ulmer tacked on a short-handed goal, his first of 2019-20, just 1:24 after Smirnov's goal to double the advantage. MacKenzie MacDonald and Becker picked up assists on the goal.

The goaltenders stole the show in the second period, keeping both teams off the board to keep the score at 2-0 after 40 minutes of play. Bryn Athyn's McKenzie Chalmers was called on to make 14 saves. On the other end of the ice, Albertus Magnus' Pierce Diamond stopped 12 shots.

The Falcons (0-2-2) pulled a goal back late in the third period when Charles Risk cut the Lions' lead in half with 1:59 left in the contest.

After assisting on the first two goals of the game, Becker put his name in the goal column by scoring an empty-net goal at 18:33 to seal the game. Connor Devereux notched an assist.

Chalmers finished the game with 24 saves, while Diamond stopped 36 shots.

Both penalty-killing units would be busy and very successful. Bryn Athyn was 0-for-8 on the power play and Albertus Magnus went 0-for-6 on the man advantage.

Bryn Athyn returns to action next weekend at Nazareth on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m.
