Lions tamed by Gwynedd Mercy in opening game of 2019

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Jimmy Koniecki put together a strong debut for the Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse team as he scored four times in his first collegiate game, a 21-7 non-conference loss to Gwynedd Mercy Wednesday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.

Cameron Leech, the school's record holder for assists in a season, picked up right where he left off a season ago by picked up an assist on six of the seven Bryn Athyn (0-1) goals.

James Vandegrift, Nolan Bosserman, and Shane McCurdy also found the back of the net for the Lions.

Bosserman recorded Bryn Athyn's first goal just 2:39 into 2019 season as he ripped a shot from 12 yards away to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage. After the Griffins (3-0) leveled the score, Vandegrift answered back at 6:19 to put the Lions back up 2-1.

Gwynedd Mercy ran off the next five goals, two while playing a man-up, to take a 6-2 lead at the 9:22 mark of the second quarter. McCurdy briefly stopped the Gwynedd Mercy momentum with a goal two minutes later, but the Griffins scored the last two goals of the half to lead 8-3 after 30 minutes.

The Griffins sealed the game in the third quarter, scoring eight times to widen the margin to 16-6. Koniecki recorded all three Lion goals during the quarter. Jacob Dzierzgowski scored four of his game-high seven goals for the Griffins, while Ryan Simpson netted two of his game total three goals.

The Griffins ran off five straight goals to begin the fourth quarter to make the score 21-6. Koniecki closed out the scoring with his fourth and final goal, assisted by Mike Haas, with 1:57 remaining.

Nick Freda had a hat trick, while Daniel Decker and Zach Groses both added two goals and one assist.

Tyree Sewell led the Bryn Athyn defense with three caused turnovers.

Lion goalie Brad DePasquale stopped five shots before being lifted from Tristan Banks, who made four saves in the final 25:22. Aubron Swartley recorded 14 stops for the Griffins.

Bryn Athyn heads to Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) for a non-conference showdown on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m.
