Volleyball drops pair of matches at Gwynedd Mercy University TrI-Match

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College women's volleyball team suffered a pair of non-conference losses at the Gywnedd Mercy University Tri-Match on Saturday afternoon. The Lions were upended by Bryn Mawr 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-20) and the host Griffins 3-1 (25-18, 12-25-, 25-13, 25-15).

In the opener against Bryn Mawr (5-7), Jenessa Lombardi led Bryn Athyn with a career-high nine kills, 13 assists, and five digs. Hannah Dewees added seven kills, while Allaina Brock and Briana Cliney contributed four kills each.

Bryn Athyn was in control during the early stages of the first set thanks to a 6-1 run, including three Dewees kills, to open up a 7-2 advantage. The Lions remained in front until an 11-2 Owl surge gave Bryn Mawr a 24-16 lead.

Set two was all Bryn Mawr as the Owls posted a hitting percentage of .250 while holding the Lions to .000.

In the final set, Bryn Mawr sprinted out to a 7-2 lead, but Bryn Athyn fought back to close within 7-5. The Owls looked to break away once again as they extended the gap to 15-8. However, Bryn Athyn surged back with a 7-2 run, that included two Lombardi kills, to pull with 17-15. It was as close as the Lions would get.

Bryn Mawr received nine kills from Sienna Burnett and 18 assists and 10 digs from Nicole Wood.

Against Gwynedd Mercy, Lex Juritsch and Cliney each had double-digit kills with 10 each. Juritsch completed her first double-double of the year as she also recorded 11 digs. Lombardi posted her first collegiate double-double with 27 assists and 13 digs. Dewees added eight kills and 13 digs, while Chloe Levan led the team with 18 digs.

Bryn Athyn (4-6) claimed an early 3-1 set-one lead thanks to a Cliney kill and solo block and a Dewees kill. The Griffins (7-7) answered the early Lion momentum by scoring 12 of the next 16 points to take a 13-7 advantage. With Gwynedd Mercy ahead 20-13, Bryn Athyn ran off three straight points to close the gap to four (20-16). Gwynedd Mercy ended the set outscoring Bryn Athyn 5-2.

Neither team was able to gain much traction in set two as the score was tied on 16 different occasions. Finally, a Clayshonia Cogmon kill gave the Lions the momentum they needed to win set as it started a set-winning 5-0 run.

Gywnedd Mercy controlled the third set as they had a team hitting percentage of .211, while Bryn Athyn's hitting percentage was -.026.

Bryn Athyn was in charge during the early stages of set four, storming out to a 6-2 lead on a Levan service ace. Then, Gwynedd Mercy scored 13 of the following 16 points to jump ahead 15-9. The Lions would get as close as five on two different occasions during the rest of the set.

Four players reached double-digit kills for Gwynedd Mercy, led by Cassie McCarney's 12. Bridget McTammey registered 40 assists and 16 digs. Cait Saalfrank had 27 digs and five aces.

Bryn Athyn returns to the friendly confines of Asplundh Field House for its final non-conference tune-up before starting on Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 25 against Wesley at 7 p.m.
